The Arrow of Love

In my quiver, I carry two obsessions. One is archery, a dream rooted in my heart since the day I first gripped a wooden bow at ten. The other is Eddie Shawn, the man who stands in the light and shadow of the archery range, the one who can silence all the noise around him. I've loved archery since I was a child—not a passing fancy, but a passion etched deep in my bones. I took long routes home from school just to watch the local archery team train, saved my pocket money to buy the cheapest arrows, and practiced drawing, aiming, and releasing over and over against the tree trunk in my backyard. Eddie Shawn was the captain of that local archery team and later became my boyfriend. His archery skills were famed in the community; when he drew the bow, his shoulders and back formed a smooth line, and the moment the arrow left the string was nearly silent—yet it always struck the bullseye with perfect accuracy. I met him at an amateur archery meetup. Back then, I was still a restless beginner—my arms shook when drawing the bow, and my arrows veered wildly off target, drawing snickers from those around me. He came over, gently took my wrist, adjusted my stance and grip, and said in a low, gentle voice, "Calm down, let the arrow follow your breath." From that day on, he became my first mentor and slowly walked into my life. My greatest wish was to stand side by side with him on the archery team's training field, chasing dreams about arrows together. At last, when the local archery team opened up more spots, I gathered all my strength and prepared for three months. On the day of the tryouts, the sunlight was blinding; I stood at the target lane, Eddie Shawn's instructions echoing over and over in my mind. After one round, I gripped the score sheet tightly, my fingertips icy cold. Just five points short, only five rings away—I didn't make the cut. A huge wave of loss crashed over me like a tide. I found Eddie Shawn right away, my eyes still glistening with tears that hadn't dried. "Eddie, you're the leader. Can you say a word to the Selection Team for me?" I grabbed his sleeve, my voice full of plea, "Just this once. I promise I'll do everything I can from now on; I won't let you down."
