Betrayal in the Details

The sunlight on our seventh wedding anniversary morning was as warm as it had been on our wedding day seven years ago. But I was awakened by pain—not in my heart, but in my stomach, as if an icicle were piercing downward. Grandmother's voice still echoed in my ears from the dream: "Veronica, he has changed his heart." I opened my eyes to find three women sitting in the room: my close female friend, the girl he sponsors, and his most trusted assistant. Grandmother said, "That woman is among the people you see the moment you open your eyes."收起

Chapter 1 of "Betrayal in the Details"

On the morning of our seventh wedding anniversary, I awoke with a sharp pain in my abdomen. Sunlight filtered through the sheer curtains, casting dappled shadows across the floor. A dull pain in my lower abdomen made me curl up, and soon a fine cold sweat broke out on my forehead. The dream from last night still lingered vividly in my mind—Grandmother's wrinkled face, her eyes filled with a seriousness I had never seen before. "Veronica, he has changed his heart." Grandmother's voice was like the pendulum of an old clock, striking my heart with every tick. I remembered desperately shaking my head in the dream, trying to deny her words. How could Jacob Chow possibly have changed his heart? We have weathered so many storms together; his kindness to me is engraved deep within my bones. "That woman is right there among the people you see the moment you open your eyes." Grandmother spoke these final words before her figure dissolved into the hazy mist. I jolted awake, my heart still racing wildly in my chest. Rustling sounds came from the living room. I struggled to sit up, threw on a coat, and stepped out of the bedroom. I froze when I saw the three people sitting on the sofa. It's Yvette Carter, a close female friend I've known for over ten years; Amy, a college student I've been supporting for three years; and Bella Zamora, Jacob Chow's capable assistant. How could they all be here at the same time? "Veronica, you're awake?" Yvette was the first to stand, quickly coming to my side and reaching out to check my forehead. "Are you still feeling unwell? Jacob was rushed to the office this morning, so they came over to take care of you." Amy also stood up, holding a cup of warm water: "Veronica, have some water. Yvette said your cramps are severe. I just brewed some brown sugar ginger tea and kept it warm in the kitchen." Bella Zamora pushed up her glasses, her tone tinged with professional concern: "Mr. Chow instructed that you should rest well today. He will handle the company's affairs, and if you need anything, feel free to contact me anytime." Their words were filled with genuine care, but Grandmother's words felt like a thorn, unsettling my heart. The person I would see the moment I opened my eyes... Could it really be one of them? The thought had barely surfaced before I forced it down. Yvette Carter is my closest friend; we have shared all our secrets. Amy is still in school, innocent and kind-hearted; I have always thought of her as a little sister. Bella Zamora is Jacob Chow's capable assistant, always strictly separating work from personal matters. How could they possibly have anything to do with Jacob Chow? It must have been the nightmare combined with feeling unwell that made me overthink. I took the water Amy handed me and forced a smile. "Thank you all, I'm fine, just the usual old ailment." Yvette Carter helped me sit down on the sofa, her brow furrowed. "It's all Jacob's fault. Knowing full well today is your wedding anniversary, yet he insisted on going to the office." No sooner had she finished speaking than Bella Zamora's phone rang. Seeing the caller ID, Bella Zamora's expression shifted slightly. She stepped aside and answered the call. "Mr. Chow... yes, we are all here... Ms. Veronica has woken up, and her condition is stable... Alright, I understand." After hanging up, Bella returned. "Mr. Chow said he'll try to get back by noon to have lunch with you. Let us keep you company and have something to eat first." Hearing that Jacob Chow was returning, the unease in my heart eased somewhat. Perhaps it really was just my overthinking. Yvette Carter scowled beside me, displeased. "What could be more important than your wedding anniversary? When he gets back, I'll be having words with him." Amy lowered her head and whispered, "Mr. Chow is probably just focused on work. He has always treated Veronica very well." I looked at the three of them, searching their faces for any sign of deceit, but they all seemed perfectly natural. A sharp pain in my lower abdomen struck again. I leaned back against the sofa and closed my eyes. Grandmother's voice echoed in my ears once more, lingering and impossible to shake.
